Rachel Harrington and Rita Hosking Northwest Tour
Wednesday March 24th, 2010 7:30 pm at The Island Music Center, Rolling Bay
On Wednesday March 24th , 2010, Rachel Harrington and Rita Hosking will co-bill a concert at the The Island Music Center, Rolling Bay as part their two-week tour throughout the Northwest, March 19-27.
Both of these native West Coast, country-folk singer-songwriters feel a strong connection to place and to creating music that, at least in part, captures some of the stories and heritage of their home.
Reared among the Pentecostal pines of Oregon, Rachel Harrington has been doing
things in the wrong order for quite some time. She'd had extensive radio play
before performing her live show, and she was opening for Grammy winners and
nominees before releasing her first record. Rachel's 2007 debut, The Bootlegger's
Daughter, (featuring John Reischman and Danny Barnes) went to #1 on the Euro-Americana
Chart and was heralded by legendary BBC DJ Bob Harris as one of the best albums
of the year. “Will steal your heart,” (Performing Songwriter.)
Harrington's sophomore album, City of Refuge, (with guests Tim O'Brien and
Pieta Brown) has reached millions of listeners through Starbucks in-store airplay
in the US. Rachel has spent the past three years touring aggressively abroad,
where she has played most of the major folk festivals and was just awarded
Best Overseas Artist by Spiral Earth readers. "Gothic tracks on an inspiringly
original album!" FOUR STARS (Q Magazine.)
Kitchen tables, loggers, trailers, springs, loss, miners, culture clash, old
folks, forest fires—Rita Hosking's show is about all that and more, and
always fierce and lovely. Her delivery is, to put it simply, intense. "From
the first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go" (Joe
Craven.) Raised in eastern Shasta County, CA and descendant of Cornish miners
that sang in the mines of Grass Valley, CA, Rita was raised with deep regard
for folk music and the power of the voice. "This California girl comes
by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs
deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience," (Dan Ruby, FestivalPreview.com.)
Rita’s accolades include Best Country Album nomination (“Come Sunrise”)
for the 2010 Independent Music Awards, Winner of the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial
Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival in Oregon, and Finalist in
the 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubador Contest. “Come Sunrise,” her
third album, was recorded in Austin with producer and guitarist, Rich Brotherton
(Robert Earl Keen, Caroline Herring.) Players on the well received record include
Brotherton himself, Lloyd Maines, Warren Hood, and more. “Superb country-folk
from a brilliant singer-songwriter,” (Americana UK.)
