The New Affair
Swing Fever has been performing jazz of the 1930's and 40's for
twenty-nine years. The band has toured and recorded with renowned musicians,
including Count Basie - Duke Ellington trumpeter Clark Terry, clarinetist
Buddy DeFranco and vibraphonist Terry Gibbs. Swing Fever is dedicated to
the music of the Swing Era, playing it as critic Phil Elwood said, "as though
the numbers are on today's Hit Parade." Clever, fun, romantic, moody,
witty - here is wonderful, classic music presented in its full emotional
range.
Swing Fever will feature vocalist Denise Perrier.
Swing Fever and Denise Perrier have performed during the past 12
years, at countless private events, and more than 100 concert performances
throughout the West including two tours in Alaska, and the notable 1999 tour
with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco.
Here is what Philip Elwood, the late music critic for the San
Francisco Examiner and Chronicle had to say:
"Perrier's work is big, rich, melodic and hits home with a
remarkable punch. She has the swirling, dancing, integrating intimacy usually
associated with Continental vocalists . . . Wherever she sings, somehow
she makes it her turf -- the sign of something special, a real pro. Perrier has
the guts of a blues-jazz singer and tile gloss of a cabaret-saloon singer.
She'll tackle tough stuff and make it her own, mixing Cole Porter, Fats Waller,
Stephen Sondheim and Duke Ellington songs into a set effortlessly. She sings
with a soft intimacy in cabarets but can belt out a Bessie Smith blues lyric, in
a stage show; Perrier's blues become ballads, the ballads become blues."
Ms. Perrier's critically acclaimed theater production of
"Unforgettable," a tribute to Dinah Washington, and musical tributes to Duke
Ellington and George Gershwin have received enthusiastic responses from
listeners everywhere from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. She performed in the
extended San Francisco production of the black vaudevillian musical "One Mo'
Time!," at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Town Hall in New York City and
San Francisco, and with the Smithsonian Duke Ellington Tribute and Exhibition.
Sponsored by the BI Park District, this concert will be held at
the Bainbridge Commons, 370 Brien Dr. SE, Bainbridge Island.
Advance Tickets are $18, Tickets at the door are $20, and youth
tickets are $10. Advance tickets available at Glass Onion, Winslow Drug,
or by calling the Park District office at (206) 842-2306.

Coming Saturday October
18, 7:30 PM - Classical Guitarist Cesar Medel and Friends
Music has played an important role on the life of guitarist and
composer Cesar Medel
www.cesarmedel.com , who began to
experience music himself at a very young age. Introduced to the guitar music by
his father, he began the adventure that later became a life dedicated to share
the value of music for guitar.
He entered the Hizidor Handler K Conservatory of Music of Vina
del Mar; there he began his study of classical guitar with Professor Ximena
Matamoros, who helped him to develop a style and an identity of his own for
interpreting the guitar. At that time he also came to know Sergio Vilchez, the
Director of the Conservatory, with whom he still shares a great friendship. In
his later years of study at the Conservatory he worked with Professor Antonio
Rioseco, the Chair of the guitar department and a Master of several research and
transcriptions of Music made for the guitar.
Motivated by his faith Cesar began arranging and performing
traditional Christian music on guitar. His Album titled "Grand Solo" is a
classical guitar album, featuring Works by important composers for the
instrument. Recorded and published in the USA, album that has been acclaimed by
the public and followers of the artist.
Cesar resides in the beautiful Washington State, in the USA,
along with his wife and two daughters (Carolina and Danette), in a place that he
recalls "Celtic Land", because of the impressive landscapes, the islands and its
culture.
In April 2007, he officially released Unforgettable Songs under
Greenland Music Group (his record label) with interpretations on guitar of
popular hits in music. He releases Eternal Light in June 2008, a
collection of religious (Christian) songs and Hymns, based in the musical
concept of the original album recorded in 2001,featuring arrangements for solo
guitar, duets and trio ansambles of guitar, violin and piano.
With a busy schedule, Cesar continues giving concerts and
recitals, delighting audiences with his performances.
This will be Cesar's final Bainbridge performance before leaving
the US for a position in Spain.
